To sum up the definition i picked was “…no one knows, it hasn’t happened yet…”. So this definition is basically saying that science fiction is imagination of the possible. They are things that can happen in the future. I also had another good definition in mind that said, “sf is the art of the possible, fantasy is the art of the impossible.” I think these two are the best definitions because it helps to understand that the things happening in sf movies and books can actually happen. For my scene analysis I did Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. While watching the movie you can’t really ever say that these things can’t happen. Thinking about the evolution of humans, it is said that we came from monkeys; but at the same time a lot of animals are very smart. So in the future it is very well possible that an animal can learn how to ride a horse, shoot a gun, build a complex infrastructure, and so on. Science fiction is for entertainment and to let one’s imagination fun free, but who is to say that these things cant happen. In Ex Machina the androids learned how to feel and be manipulative. The world is at a place where we are building fully functional robots and droids who may eventually learn how to feel and figure things out on their own. For a long time people have been thinking that society may one day be overthrown by robots if they become too advanced. In one of the definitions…
Metalhead
I think an overall theme of the episode could be docile. I think that every time the women came close to death while fighting the ‘dog’ is significant. She was fighting almost the entire time trying to figure out ways to get away and/or stop it. The dialogues when she was talking in the radio are also important. You can tell through her emotions how hard she was trying and how much she was set on finishing what she went she went out there to do. The end dialogue I feel is the most important though. She says to loved ones that she really tried but she has reached her limit of options, there was nothing left for her to do. She pours out all her love to them letting them know that she wont be coming back to them. She’d already somewhat escaped once, but she then was out of time to get away because there were more tracking devices put in her and it was too late.
Black Mirror “Metalhead”
In the opening scene of the episode, a black and white filter is used; the coloring automatically makes the mood of the scene dreary and bleak. Some of the camera shots used seem to be shot by a drone overhead; the post apocalyptic setting adds to the desolated feel of the shot. The is also no music or added sounds at this point; the absence of sound makes the scene even more lonely than it already it. Close up shots of the peoples faces are constantly used to show the lonesome and desperation in their eyes. The long deserted road shows the long journey that they may be on just trying to survive. As the people start to search around an abandoned building suspenseful noises start to play as if something is coming for them; the noises become louder as time go’s on making the situation feel more and more dangerous. The The music suddenly comes to a halt when one of the men is murdered by a robot; the stop in the music creates a dramatic effect to make the viewer feel as if that may be the end of the danger. Close ups of the women’s face give the notion that she is still very much scared of the danger that she could still be in; the shot shows the viewer her trembling eyes and face as she winces in pain from being injured. There is a close up of the wound on her leg; the tracking devise inserted into her leg emphasizes the danger that she is still in. The blinking light of the tracker gives the scene the feeling that she is under a time limit and must get it out before she is found. The panning shot of the water bottle with the tracker inside to me shows her current danger being washed away and forgotten. The wall the women is hit with literally represents another obstacle that she has hit; there is not easily visible way in or over, under pressure she had to find a way to solve the current problem she now faces. Shots through the eyes of the ‘dog’ are used giving the viewer a look into both sides. The intense music starts back up foreshadowing the possible danger the women is now in because of this new building on the other side of the wall she is now searching. The absence of noise within the house puts me on edge as the viewer because it makes me think that something will pop up out of nowhere because there is no one present and moving around. She’s currently alone but is she ever really alone? The waver in the music creates a dangerous and suspenseful ambiance; there is a sense of danger that comes and go’s making the scene more interesting. In a camera shot on the women’s face, it shows very clearly her emotions, the music stops as the camera pans in on her face… but then, she winces in pain and nothing else happens. The director created this moment of suspense to keep the viewer intrigued, to keep them wondering what will soon happen to her, the stop in the music keeps the viewer anxiously waiting and glued to the screen. As she enters a room, the white noise from a tv is the only sound; tv static is usually associated with lonesome and maybe even isolation, for most of the episode the women has been alone trying to escape from the dog. There is no reply back on the radio as the women says her goodbyes, there is only static; the radio was the only way of communication, there was no one on the other side to help her. The static is loneliness that surrounds her as she accepts her fate. In the end the director adds a shot the of the warehouse where all three people had been searching. There on the floor lied a box of teddy bears; the women was had been looking for a “replacement”. It was never stated what for but in the end dialogue, the women is talking to children and says that she tried. The box of teddy bears was her whole reason for fighting so hard to survive.
Walking Dead Opening Scene
When someone says they’ve hit a crossroad, it means that they’ve run into an unavoidable situation; a stump, a blockage. Rick has been hit with a situation that he has to. Cars take us on journeys, when you see the car in the street flipped over and ricks car up right it could mean that his life may be about to flip upside down and change completely. This scene has no music, it is filled with the silence of the wind blowing, signs swinging, metal clanking, and so on. It is purely just the sound of no one around, there are no people walking, cars running, children laughing. Rick seems to be walking as if he’s had to do this before but it’s all still new to him, his face shows that he may be confused as well as cautious about what he does. The switch to the handheld camera is a switch to Rick’s point of view. It basically shows what he sees and how he’s looking at it. There are toys on the ground which tell the viewer that there used to be children around. The baby doll on the ground could be foreshadowing the little girl that rick sees. The baby doll has on clothes that seem to have faded, changed color and gotten dirty; the little girl is the irl version of the baby doll that has turned. Rick standing in between the two cars could be basically saying that he is now stuck in the middle of this situation that could cause him death. Red and black both symbolize death, where he is walking, death has occurred all around him. He is in a deserted place. There is a “no gas” sign at the gas station. So someone has already come through there before Rick so he is not alone in this apocalypse. The blur of the girls legs makes the viewer wonder if she is alive or not. Some wouldn’t expect her to be surviving on her own though. The girl goes to pick up a teddy bear. The viewer can now see that her legs are beat up and very pale, so you could make the assumption that she is a walker because of the state of her skin. But by her picking up the bear is shows that she may still have some type of brain function left in her. The bear, the slippers, and the pink robe show her innocence and purity. She was most likely really scared and confused as to why this was happening. The red car in the back by her head in this frame could show the absence of life in her brain. Or it could be her walking towards her death you could say. Also there could be a dead body in the red car which would represent that death has occurred there. The shot on Rick’s face show his change of emotion after seeing this girl that he presumes is alive. He then says that he is a police officer thinking that it will give this girl a sense if relief and that she would now be safe with him but it is sadly too late. The silence up until the end gives the scene a sense of suspense. A scene ending with a gunshot is used a lot to signify the start of a new journey. I think the central message of the scene is desolation.
Response to A Quiet Place
Watching the intro of the movie, I would say that the overall theme is understanding. The youngest child in the family seems to know the gist of the situation they are in. But maybe doesn’t fully comprehend the degree of danger disobeying would put him in. The deaf daughter understands the situation and is aware of as much as she can be. But without her cochlear, she has no perception of sound which puts her in a different sense of danger. The little boy imagines himself and his family escaping via a rocket. A toy rocketship is close to falling causing a panic in the sister. She knows the danger of letting the rocket hit the floor so she saves her brother from being in danger. Later the child is told again that the toy would be too loud by his father. The parents are protecting three children as well as themselves. Explaining to children the type of situation they’ve been put in and how to maneuver it is I’m assuming a difficult task. After being rejected the rocketship toy, the sister then goes against her father and gives her brother the toy; the daughter maybe doesn’t know that the toy would make noise or that her brother would grab the batteries that were taken out. As the family is walking to find shelter, the boy is left in the back of everyone with no supervision. He knows the toy will make noise but probably thinks at one point that it won’t do him any harm this one time. In life lessons teach someone not to do certan things. But in their situation, making noise would be a lesson that one wouldn’t be given time to reflect on.
I don’t know if this counts as one moment but I’d say when the director switches to the point of view of the daughter. Every time we are shown her pov, it becomes silence that’s not really silence. I feel this is powerful in the way that it shows the viewers a point of view that they may not be able to relate to. It makes them think of how the situation is different for her and that she has to be aware and cautious in more ways. Whenever the point of view is switched, everything is still there, the surroundings, lighting, setup, but the sound is the only thing that makes her perspective so interesting. It takes you into a different moment; it makes you switch between your other senses and focus more on other things. Also whenever in her perspective, it most times zooms in on her face. She knows the situation she is in, she is apparently aware of the possible dangers that lye dormant. But giving the rocketship toy to her brother is a mistake that she may not have fully thought through. In the end of the scene you can see the horror on her face when she turns around and realizes what the decision she had made caused. I feel her facial expressions will tell her thought processes.
Ex Machina
In the beginning of the scene, the music is seems to be building up as if something were about to happen. Along with the closeups of Ava and Kyoko, it brings suspense to make the viewer wonder what they are talking about. Their words aren’t heard but you can see their lips moving so signify something was being planned. The white could be a representation of openness of freedom maybe. The length of kyoko’s dress tells that Nathan dressed her in a way that would make her sexually appealing, The dress is also white which could represent purity as well was innocence even though non consensual things may be happening to her. the knife in Kyoko’s hand is what is used to get revenge on Nathan because of what he’s done to the androids… The shadow behind Nathan could be representative of his real intentions and he cynical mind. The shot of Nathan coming from the shadow towards the two women surrounded by white could be seen as the darkness coming to overshadow the light. And the grey in between is the neutral middle. The white clothing containing the little bit of black could be that they are shown as good innocent people on the inside but underneath they also have a dark side to them. The exchange of words between Ava and Nathan shows the tension between the two, Ava despises him and asks a question that she knows she will not the truthful answer to. The music behind it creates more suspense as they begin to have this altercation. The shot of Ava running towards Nathan is from the back side of her. She is running towards the darkness that is causing her to become manipulative and violent. Nathan is then tackled by Ava. The carper underneath them is red; the red carpet could be a symbol of the blood and tears that are soon to be shed through this interaction. It could also be the violence and tension of the situation. The shot of Kyoko walking towards the other two is from the angle of the floor. The other two are having this tussle on the floor trying to control one another. There is a shadow cast on Kyoko walking towards them… The shot of Nathan above Ava is somewhat through the eyes of Ava. She is on the floor in defeat as Nathan stands over her as if asserting his dominance and stating his power. The glasses being knocked off of Nathan’s face is a representation that his perception of what is going on and what he is doing is foggy and misconstrued. The crescendo of the music when Kyoko stabs Nathan is asserting the power she now has over him as well as the feeling of her now being free of the man who has been holding her. Nathan standing in between the two shows that he…
Terminator 2
I feel the director decided to use this shot to show how life went from normal to destructive and war torn. The music is a way to show the foreshadowing of what will happen. The music gives it the feel that something bad will happen; it contradictory to the shots that are being shown. The sound of laughter is a way of showing that life was peaceful and joyous. The red could be a sign of the blood that will be shed in the near future, the war that has cause much disaster and chaos. The line through the city is saying that soon there will no longer be an LA. The lighting then became dark and drab, the scene shows that result of the nuclear bombs and how quickly it happened. In the shot the sun is gone, the atmosphere has become polluted and dark due to the destruction. The screeching of the metal is the only sound among all of the damage that just occurred (there was no more life). The now desolated playground is littered with the skeletons of the people who may have been near by. There was a little girl who was previously swinging innocently on the swing with no way of knowing what was coming next. The pan contains an absence of sound other than the wind that sweeps through the mass of skeletons. The pan then ends with a terminator stepping on and crushing the skull of a human; the job of the terminator was to abolish all human life so there was no mercy when it came to doing so. The next shot puts the viewer in front of the terminator in the midst of the current war. It shows the degree of the situation currently going on. The lighting is shinning on the robot as well as the weapon they are holding; it’s shinning on the threat that is coming for all human life. Considering the year in which this movie was made the special effects work. If it were to have been made more recently then the ability of the editors would be questionable due the technology and knowledge that we currently posses. John Conner is the leader of the resistance so he is highly respected, so the people under him show him respect when passing by. The zoom in on his face shows the importance he will have throughout the movie and. The change in music is the switch between focuses in the narrative. I think with the intro Cameron wants the viewers to see the drastic nature of the story to come. He wants us to understand the idea of disaster, war, overthrow, vengeance.
Response to first draft
I think this draft was probably one of my worst ones yet. I am a perfectionist so when I write I overthink everything as well as go back and re-write a lot. I feel as if even though it’s just a rough draft, it still needs to be as good as it can be. I try to make the wording sound sophisticated proper. I think I just need to work on being able to get my thoughts down on paper without second guessing so much and thinking it could sound better.
Arkko Dotta
Overall Theme: the overall message exemplified in Dotta’s image is catharsis.
Subclaims:
-The rope in the image can represent the hindrance of growth and acceptance.
-the hand prints in the sand could show how this event will always stay with her and is the reason why she is the person she has become.
-the grass is the opportunity for a new life after a tragedy.
Portrait of Self as Agnostic
My eye was first drawn to the burning silhouette in the center. I saw that first because it is in the center and is bigger than that other things in the image. The birds in the image are symbols because they could represent all the different religions that people may believe in. The silhouette is standing in front of a fireplace; the artist could be trying to imply that they were so overwhelmed that they began to mentally and/or physically (verbally) implode from the inside out and that was the result. With the way that the birds are facing they either could have been previously attacking her and started to flea or they could come currently coming closer to her to break her down even more. There is no fire in the fireplace that is present; some might take it as the fire has transferred to the silhouette and has taken over, or it could mean that the self implosion started unsuspectingly. Above the fire place is a mirror, in the reflection of the mirror…
